Philadelphia!
I am 50 years now,our family has 3 daughters. When I first time heard
Phillysound, it was 1973. I was thirteen yrs old. Back then I didn't know
the music I was listening to was called Phillysounds, a friend told me thats
what is was. It was very rare to hear soul and funk here via radio or
T.V then but we saw "Top of The Pops" shows and there only a few Philly
acts in the mix.
Still it was tough to get Philly records here in Seinajoki. Until 1974 and 1975, we had 2 record shops here and suddenly they had albums by MFSB, Three find
here. By the way I still do this, nowadays I just buy them as re-issued cds. I read all the record covers on Sigma Sound and decided to write to the address and
request autographed photos. I wrote dozens of letters and I don’t know if the Philly guy's ever got any of them, LOL. When I hear The Phillysound, I always get
in a happy mood. I have a big smile on my face, when I hear those great melodies, wonderful arrangements, heavenly vocalists and instrumentalists. Just
perfect to me. I have always liked drums and percussion. I Listened carefully at Earl Young’s playing and started to play “air drums” while listening Philly
records and I did learn some stuff. I still“ drum along” to all the Classics, Nobody could beat Earl! It sure is fun to do virtual drums and I bet many up and coming
do the same.
To me Phillysound was the first real soul sound I got familiar with and it's the one and only. I do not have any special favorites, since I like them all, and was
delighted when Salsoul label put out their “ Philly” records and many others followed and used the same musicians, who created the sound from the City of
Brotherly Love. Philly Disco was the best disco sound ever and without Earl’s drumming, it would not have become as popular as it was.
That drum beat was the THING.
Thanks to the Facebook now, I have become friends with many of my Idols of the Philadelphia Sound. Everyday I listen at least one Philly song or record!
My cellphone has Blue Magic’s hit “Sideshow” as a ringtone. One of the greatest Phillysongs ever. So what Phillysound means to me, besides my Family, it
means all. I dream, that one day I meet some of those people in person and can thank them of the music. The sound makes you feel good and brings a lot of
memories from mid 70s. My wife likes that sound also..To me Phillysound lives forever and forever, it is the greatest.
Then on the radio, we used to listen Radio Luxembourg on the mediumwaves ( 208 ), they played a lot of soul and
funk. All the DJs were british guys. 1973 I didn’t have a turntable yet, so I used a portable radio and a cassette
player. I still have few newer tapes left. Back to Philly, why I did i fall l in love with it? Well, the answer is very simple,
IT WAS JUST SO GOOD! It had jazz, blues, soul, just a perfect mix.
In 1974 a british music mag Black Music came into our hometown and I started to buy all issues, 12 issues a year.
There I read more and more about The Sound of Philadelphia and found out the musicians and artists. There were
Gamble and Huff, Earl Young, Boby Eli, Norman Harris, Ronnie Baker, Vince Montana, Don Renaldo, Larry
Washington and all those other Legends.
