The Soul Train theme with Earl Young on drums,
In 1973, TV host Don Cornelius approached Kenny Gamble about writing an original theme for his newly
nationally syndicated dance show Soul Train. Gamble  got the MFSB orchestra in the studio with arranger
Bobby Martin and supporting vocal group the Three Degrees. The theme song that grew out of the session
proved hugely popular when it debuted on the show. Gamble pushed Cornelius to release it as a single, and
when it finally appeared in early 1974 under the title "T.S.O.P." ("The Sound of Philadelphia"), it rocketed to
the top of both the pop and R&B charts; it also won a Grammy for Best R&B Instrumental.
His contributions to television, music and our culture as a whole will never be matched.  We may have lost our conductor but his legacy lives forever.

‘Soul Train’ created an outlet for black artists that never would have been if it hadn’t been for Cornelius,” said Kenny Gamble, who with his
partner,Leon Huff, created the Philly soul sound and wrote the theme song for the show. “It was a tremendous export from America to the world,
that showed African-American life and the joy of music and dance, and it brought people together.”  Kenny Gamble and Leon huff wrote the Soul
Train theme song and  MFSB along with Earl Young on drums played on the recording.
